Lecture Notes
I worked as an architect in the public and private sector in Auckland New Zealand from 1978 to 1990, gaining registration in 1981. After completing an empirical PhD The Mortality of New Housing Stock in 1993 I then worked as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Property at the University of Auckland from 1994 to 2005. The courses I taught included Building Economics (my speciality) in the second year of the Bachelor of Property (BProp) degree, Property Economics, Property Development, and Construction. Only one course on Building Economics was provided at undergraduate level and this course was a compulsory component of the BProp degree. Building Economics courses at Architectural Schools tend to have a large proportion of the course taken up by Economics 101 content because architectural students generally do not have any prior economics background. Economics 101 taught by the Department of Economics and Finance 101 taught by the Department of Property were compulsory courses for first year BProp students. This provided the opportunity for me to include content in my Building Economics course that is not normally included at Architectural Schools. Finance 101 did not include Life Cycle Costing, so I included this content in my Building Economics course.
